Six Types of 3D Printer Filament Available

3D printer filament is the thermoplastics feedstock for most fusion printers.3d printer filament There are several kinds of filament on the market with various corresponding temperatures to print with, requiring various temperatures for the best results. The filament you choose will depend upon the type of model you are using, the extruder you have, and the printing process you are going to use. Filmmaker should look closely at the recommended temperature range for their machine and choose a compatible filament in order to get the best results possible.

This 3D printer filament falls into a category called 'Extrusion', which has the most flexibility when compared to other filament options. They can be printed in any heat range between 198 to 225 degrees Celsius and even in the vacuum range of minus 200 to minus 250 degrees Celsius. This is because Extrusion is usually blended with a variety of other solvents to achieve specific temperatures and printing environments. The three primary Extrusion grades are Warm, Cool and Neutral. Depending on what you are trying to print, the appropriate grade of your filament will vary.

The third kind of extrusion filament on the market is 'Partial Cartridge'. This type of 3D printing filament meets the extrusion needs of those that are printing with a cartridge-based printer. Partial Cartridge Filament consists of one or more solid sheets of the filament that are held together by heat-resistant clamps. Each sheet will contain a pattern that has been imprinted on it. In a cartridge based printer, the filament size will be determined by the type of cartridge and the preferred nozzle design.

The fourth type of filament on the market is the Gelatin/Plasticizer Filament. This 3D printing filament comes in a rigid filament that is combined with a plastic base material. The filament is supplied in two different forms: Powder or Compound. These types of filament are intended for use only in 3d printers that utilize a gelsink nozzle. In a standard cartridge based printer, the gelsink allows the print to flow from the inside of the plastic base material into the nozzle without a problem.

The final type of 3d printer filament that we will discuss is the Gelatin/Plasticizer Filament. This type of filament meets the melting temperature requirements of most users. However, it does have limitations as far as print quality is concerned. As the filament melts at a high temperature, it causes blurring and reduced color resolution.

We have discussed six types of 3d printer filament available on the market today. Nylon and Spooled are the most durable and flexible. High quality nylon has the highest melting point of any material available. It can be extruded at higher temperatures, which increases its durability.
